Spider-Man film series to start over

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past 10 years of your life, you have probably heard of Spider-Man. The popular web-slinging superhero has found a place in the hearts of millions of fans, and is a cultural icon of sorts. He even has his own theme song! And of course there's the movie franchise. The first film, simply entitled Spider-Man, was released in 2002. Since then Spider-Man 2 & 3 have come along. The franchise has been a huge success: The three films, produced on a total budget of US$597 million, grossed nearly $2.5 billion worldwide. That's pretty impressive.

But instead of green-lighting Spider-Man 4, the films' producer Sony Pictures Entertainment revealed that the entire series will be rebooted. The news came after the original star of the franchise, Tobey Maguire, chose not to star in any potential sequels. Even worse was the director, Sam Raimi also opted out of the franchise. So anyway, now they are going to remake the fims all over again, going all the way back when Peter Parker gets his powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider (AGAIN!). Here's what Sony had to say about the new film:

"Culver City, CA (January 11.2010)-- Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012."

WHAT?! That has got to be the worst decision ever made in the history of cinema. I mean the Spider-Man films have been a massive hit with worldwide audiences. So what is the original guy isn't gonna star in it? Just cast a new guy and move on! Nobody wants to see the whole story play out again. If we wanted to, we could all just watch Spider-Man 1 on DVD or rental. Plus, how different could the plot be anyway? . I've read some internet comments and I'm glad to see that most fans agree with me. There's so much potential for a 4th film, and they are just forgoing the opportunity. Big mistake Sony, big mistake.

Oh yeah and get this: Robert Pattinson has expressed interest in playing Peter Parker/ Spider-Man in the new film. My reaction to this: NEVER! I'd be willing to give him a shot IF he could act, but he can't.And to top it off he just doesn't have the "look" to pull it off. He could play Harry Osborn who's Peter's best friend, maybe, but definitely not the title role.

I would seriously consider boycotting the film if Mr Edward Cullen ever lands the role. Stick to Twilight you jackass!

Another dude who might be considered for the part would be Logan Lerman. He starred in Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief. Now he I don't mind, because he looks the part and is a decent actor, unlike pretty-boy Robert.

Who knows? Maybe this new Spider-Man will be good, perhaps better than the original (although I doubt that).Hopefully Marvel comes along and buys back the film rights from Sony Pictures. They are loaded with cash, so it shouldn't be too difficult. With Spider-Man under the Marvel Studios banner, they could even link the film with the Avengers film that's due in 2012. Wishful thinking...HaHa.

Damn you Sony Pictures.
